Since it was the first state to issue an order – I was scared. I didnโt know what it meant, how strict it was or what would happen next. AND I was staying in a temporary place, in another county about 40 miles from my family.
So bright and early the next morning I packed up my stuff and took it to my parents. I slept there that night and went back for a few things the next day. And since then Iโve been trying to get settled at my parentsโ back house studio apartment.ย
Now enough about me letโs talk about youโฆ and running in the Main Event.ย

Running During the Coronavirus Outbreak
Hello!! Itโs been way too long since weโve caught up! But this is a special episode about running during the Coronavirus outbreak.ย
Please note: Iโm not a doctor, scientist, scientologist or therapist. So this is a round up of reputable places you can look for information on how to stay healthy and running during the COVID19 situation – but this doesnโt replace medical advice, common sense or formal therapy.ย
Even though this is a special episode – letโs start off with a warm up.ย
Warm Up: In case youโre new here – the podcast is usually broken up into 3 parts:
- The Warm Up
- The Main Thing or Interviewย
- Awards

The warm up isn’t supposed to take 3:35 minutes so we canโt catch up on everything. Weโll talk about my foot and running in the upcoming episodes.ย ย
I want to address the virus in the room and events leading up to where we are now.ย
The quick version is – I sold my condo in December and planned on staying in vacation rentals or extended stays while I looked for a place to rent or buy. Let’s review…
Place 1 – Redlands Air BnB

First I stayed at a place in Redlands, CA near my brother, SIL and nieces. It was great to be close by over Christmas! But they were planning on moving and I didnโt find a spot that was runner friendly (I know there are places to run there because Iโve run the Redlands Half Marathon – I just didnโt find them after looking for a couple weeks).ย
Place 2 – Irvine, CA Extended Stayย

I stayed at an extended stay in Irvine. Loved it. Except someone stole a whole load of laundry including a bunch of NEW Fabletics leggings and a couple tops from Stitchfix.ย
Place 3 – Long Beach, CA Air BnB half a mile from the beach. Loved the location, but not the parking situation.ย

Place 4 – South Orange County, CA House Sitting

I house sat for my friend for a month while he went to Brazil. Loved the location, having a doggy door so I didnโt have to walk Diego early or late and a full kitchen.
Place 5 – Lake Forest, CA Extended Stay
When I was frantically packing up and moving out when the ‘Stay Home’ / ‘Shelter in Place’ order went into effect in California:

I thought this was going to be just like the extended stay I was at before – but it was nothing of the sort. It was basically a so-so hotel where people lived (versus the other location feeling like a corporate apartment building for work).ย
And thatโs where I was staying when the whole Coronavirus situation started to grow. As more news came out about it I was trying to be more careful since. I was basically living in a hotel and exposed to a lot more people and potential germs than if I were at a home.ย
I was thinking about staying with my family starting in April until all this was over.
But the Coronavirus Outbreak was spreading faster than I realized it would and authorities were saying to be extra careful, stay home, things were closing and I was getting worried.ย
Then, I checked the news one night before going to sleep and saw the Governor of California said a Stay at Home order was going into effect at midnight. THAT NIGHT.ย

Now enough about me letโs talk about youโฆ and running in the Main Event.

Coronavirus Resources
Iโm not a doctor or an expert on anything (except maybe on how to be a red-headed Mexican?). So this is not medical advice. Itโs also not running advice.ย
Information, restrictions and advice is changing quickly and often.ย Guidance from medical professionals, scientists and government officials seems to change almost daily. And sometimes there are mixed messages or contradictory messages from different authorities.ย
So, it wouldnโt be 100% reliable to tell you how to run safely during the Coronavirus outbreak – because that information might change in an hour.ย
When I first wrote this post on Tips to Run During the Coronavirus Outbreak – I shared information based on trusted non-partisan resources (like the World Health Organizationโs website).ย
But since that post it seems experts have found the virus can spread through interacting with others in close proximity – including by just speaking with someone who is infected (they can be contagious and not have any symptoms).ย
Now the Centers for Disease Control now suggest everyone wear a face cover while out in public.ย
โThis means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximityโfor example, speaking, coughing, or sneezingโeven if those people are not exhibiting symptoms.ย In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.โ
And maybe tomorrow theyโll suggest wearing scuba gear at all times?
I donโt know.
So please check the latest information and recommendations from ethical, researched based, educated experts on this topic.ย
This isn’t that, but I did go to college to be a reporter – which is not a good enough reason for you to listen to me on anything, but Iโm trying to make a pointโฆย
One of my favorite quotes I learned in a journalism class was,ย โIf your mom says she loves you – check it out.โ
Basically, CHECK EVERYTHING.ย
If someone tells you something – fact check it and/or cross-reference it with someone else who saw it or is an expert.ย
In this case – if youโre looking for information on the Coronavirus or how to stay healthy or if you can exercise outsideโฆ Check the information from experts (in this case itโs often infectious disease doctors, other doctors and scientists).ย
